Well that was fun. We were provided with all kinds of new information (and confirmation of some theories) this week…as we expected. Richard is from sunny (well, except when it’s raining) Tenerife. I always thought it was just a beach with a bunch of bars and hotels. Who knew it had a jungle and that it rained there too?
All these 7’s, 1867, 1977, 2007. 777 is supposed to be good, right? Speaking of Tenerife and 1977…an island, a couple of planes crashing (well, crashed into each other but…) much like where we are now.
Richard is a good person who has only done one (that we know of) bad thing, manslaughter. He ended up receiving a stay of execution when it was more profitable to sell him into slavery.
So, the big statue was smashed to pieces when the Black Rock (full of TNT) hit it? Of course, the Black Rock was still pretty much in one piece. I’m going to assume it was some tsunami-like wave which carried the boat that high and the force of it is what destroyed the statue. However, wouldn’t the pieces of the statue have been carried inland as well? Or did they just sink after breaking apart? Was Jacob hanging out in his light house when it hit? Or is his apartment at the base of the statue waterproof?
Is it just me or do most people arrive on the island unconscious? Yeah, there have been some who seem to have been awake through it all but from Jack waking up after the crash to the guys in the Black Rock waking up to sunlight (well, you could see it trying to come through the cargo hatch) and even the sedation needed to ride on the sub, most are asleep. But that’s probably one of the questions we’ll never find the answer to.
Richard did ask the priest for penance….not sure he was ready for how long he got. The warning, “Be careful what you ask for” kept coming to mind. He wanted to avoid going to hell by living forever. That’s a pretty big burden. Some might say it’s like he made a deal with the devil.
Was it just me or did Richards backstory seem like it was taken from one of those cheesy romance novels? I looked but so far haven’t found anything to support my theory that Richard’s wife was given that name to commemorate my mother’s recently departed cat.
Remember how Eko refused to confess when Yemi (probably Smokey) demanded him to? Smokey then got rid of him. Richard confessed profusely and this is why, I’m theorizing, Smokey helped (or recruited) him. I guess for Smokey to be successful and prove his point, he has to weed out those who don’t want to do what is right first.
Here’s my list of who Smokey has appeared as Christian, Yemi, Walt, Alex, Godspeed, Isabella, Ben’s mom, Kate’s horse…who am I missing? Seems he can appear as anyone after, somehow, reading their subconscious or something. What are the odds that the Anthony Cooper killed by Sawyer was really just Smokey? After all, he claimed the island was hell just as Isabella did.
Well, Hurley sure has a special gift. Talking to Charlie was just the start. He has now talked to a dead Jacob, Ana Lucia, and now Isabella. What about Dave? Ya know, the guy in the robe? Was that Smokey? He did try to get Hurley to jump off the cliff. We now know it wouldn’t have mattered.
Hurley is able to follow a well preserved 200+ year old all night through the jungle without being too worn out. Richard has been clean cut for 5 seasons now, however, he’s a mess right now…unkept and dirty…well, my his standards. Hurley looks like he had time to shower and wash his clothes before stepping out and relaying Isabella’s messages.
Smokey was able to use Richard’s fear of the Devil and his strong religious belief to be what, I assume, was Smokey’s first attempt at the loophole. This attempted backfired. I wonder how many other attempts Smokey has made? Perhaps that’s why Jacob only allows invited guests over for grilled fish.
Hurley’s last message from Isabella is that if he doesn’t help stop Smokey Locke, everyone is going to Hell. There they (Jacob and Smokey) go using Richard’s greatest fear against him again.
Smokey unchains Richard and says “it’s good to see you out of those chains”. When Smokey Locke sees Richard (after Ben kills Jacob) he says “it’s good to see you out of those chains.” That’s when Richard got upset.
I don’t get it. Dogen tells Sayid that in order for him to kill Smokey Locke, he must stab him in the heart before he says a word. Smokey tells Richard that in order to kill Jacob, he must stab him in the heart before he says a word. Coincidence? Yet Ben was told by Jacob (just before stabbing him) that it wasn’t too late to change his mind….and he died.
I’ve theorized for at least a year now that they (the others) weren’t protecting the island but that the island was keeping something in. Well, if the island is the cork keeping evil contained in the bottle, does that make the good in people, the choice to do the right thing, the bottle? After all, we saw at the end that the cork is no good without the bottle to hold the wine. That darn Pandora and her box. Didn’t Ben say that somewhere on the island there was a box which would provide anything you wanted?
Once again, we saw that Jacob was wearing black, including gloves, when he visited Ilana in the Russian (I think that’s the language they were speaking) hospital. He didn’t touch her. Dark colors off the island? I’m trying to remember what he was wearing (colors) when he touched the candidates.
Speaking of colors, Hurley in red really seems to stand out. Power-tie red? I dunno.
Miles didn’t have much to say this week.
Will we find out on May 23rd that Smokey’s name is Job or something like that? According to Jacob, he believes that he can bring out the evil in everyone. Jacob believes that even flawed people are good and will do the right thing without being told what to do. However, that hasn’t happened yet it seems. According to Jacob in the finale last season, it only takes one time to prove it.
I’m thinking Richard isn’t too bright. He was Jacob’s messenger for well over two centuries and he was still never able to guide those brought to the island to do the right things. It seems the only interactions everyone has had were with Smokey. Jacob just chilled in his apartment (now missing its hood-ornament) making wall tapestries while Smokey was running around trying to get everyone to do bad things. No wonder Smokey just wants to go home.
Hurley, though flawed, seems to do the right thing without being told. Rose & Bernard seem to as well, but they aren’t candidates. What exactly is the end though? My guess, it’s an end to the island timeline…but what do I know?
This week, Richard and Isabella were reunited….Next week, will Jin and Sun finally be reunited? All we need is Fabio on the cover and some Peaches and Herb on the radio.
